Skin Deep

The Lord told Samuel to go and anoint one of the sons of Jesse to be the next king. When he arrived, Jesse came and brought his eldest son. Eliab, Jesse's oldest son, was most likely tall and very good looking. And since he was the oldest, he had the most experience of  the brothers and a man of God. When Samuel saw him he said, "Surely this is the Lord's anointed!" (1 Samuel 16:6)

"But the Lord said to Samuel, "Don't judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The Lord doesn't see things the way you see them.

People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.

It's Christmas morning and everyone is excited to see what they got for the special holiday. This year you decide to just watch and see all the gifts that your family received before you open your own gifts. When your family is finished opening their gifts they tell you to open yours. Reluctantly, you decided to take the first box. The wrapping was designed just right and it looks better than any others you have ever seen before. The bow on the top looks professionally made, everything about the outside of the box is so beautiful it just takes your breath away. In fact, the outside is so beautiful, you decide to not even open up the box to see what is inside.

Sounds crazy, right?

What was on the inside of the box was far better than what was on the outside. [You can miss so much about someone if you only look on the outside.] Years may pass by and soon the wrapping paper turns yellow and begins to tear away. The bow which used to look so perfect is now smashed and discolored. Yet on the inside, it is still the same.

This can go both ways. For example good and bad attitudes.

In fact the Bible puts it this way.

"Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised."

-- Proverbs 31:30
